There was a time in the sixties that many people considered the Horn to be the best in the world, who knows? but that's how good he was!

AT his peak in '67 and '68 he was the best action bowler around in the country many felt. To me Lemon and him were equal. I mean how much better than Lemon could you have been. They beat up on everybody and any pro that walked into Central. I can tell you that when Horn was around 18, he averaged 218 at Bedford, unheard of in those days. He won the tough Vargo one year that four pound wood tournament with a incredible score of 1080. he also was the first to average over 200(206) at that dungeon Bowlmor. he was so talented and through it all away with all his gambling. He had the heart of a lion, if he needed a double in the tenth you ran to the bank and he had no problem betting $1g when a $100 bet was nice in those days.

Why is there such a difference in the attitude and respect for each other between the action bowlers of today and years gone by...

I do not think there is much of a difference. However, when action was real they were not afraid to gamble. I mean week after week guys would put their sailor suits on and lose to the same guys 4, 5 6 weeks in a row. I remember beating one guy 6 weeks in a row at central until he realized he was not the better bowler. What really made the action was the back. somebody could win the first four and there were always people in the back coming along to bet the fifth game. 2am and I'm on my computer. 37 years ago we would have been at Central at this time with about 20 matches going. also, how many tank matches back in the day? these guys were so good, they could tank and you would never know it except for Iggy. Remember, the heart attack match?

The Hustle
The first real experience I had witnessing a total hustle, involved Bernie Bananas and Al Rosa, Bernie was a young Jewish boy that looked like your typical book worm, a real nerd or so you would think , he was 15 yrs old at the time. Al was in his mid twenties about 6ft tall with a spare tire around the middle, just married, just moved into the neighborhood, a real nice guy. He lived above a store on Ave M across from the bowling alley, Al had a hi paying job as a fur cutter.
Right after Al moved onto Ave M, he made the biggest mistake of his life. Al would take the D train home from his job in Manhattan, which ran on the elevated line on McDonald Ave along the side of the bowling alley. It was pay day, Als pockets were full, as he walked down the steps from the train he decided to check out the bowling alley. The second he walked through the door, Bernie new he had a pigeon.
What went on the next year changed and ruined Als life forever. Bernie would bowl Al every Friday when he got paid, after he beat Al for his whole paycheck he would bowl one more game on credit, this way Al would have to come back the following week on pay day to give Bernie what was owed to him from the previous week. That would start a whole new cycle again.
Al couldn't beat Bernie if both his eyes were covered; it was an out and out hustle. Al became a degenerate gambler, lost his wife, his job, and everything else.

The two characters I enjoyed watching the most were Iggy Russo and Bert Goodman. They had totally different personalities, does anyone know if they ever bowled against each other?...
