i just returned from n y where i attended the funeral of lefty dan glass, one of brooklyns best leftys the last 30 years. he passed away last monday of a heart attack.
just a couple of stories involving dan and myself.
back in the 60s we took a 8 hour drive to the steel classic in pittsburgh, to bowl in this tournament we paracticed on one side of this 20 lane house and we averaged in the 220s, we gbo to the tournament side and we are playing on mixed wood 4 pound to 3pound 2 ounce and it seemed the 1st game he had the wrong set up on one and two , since he struck every shot on 2 and left a 7-9 on every shot on lane one.
we get back to brooklyn that sunday night and my wife at the time had broken her leg. i cashed but nothing big, not enough to pay the dr bill.
another time in 1971 we go to bowl 2 tournaments in jersey on a saterday, (kegler) 1st tournament he shoots 712 and comes in 1st i shoot 685 with a 150 game and come in 5th. we go to the next house and practice on a pair and we both struck on every shot , no matter where we played it struck everywhere from 5 to 20 for me , but for dan with his full roller at that time somewhere between 5 and ten. fearing i might give him some competition on trying to win a double on the same weekend, he says to me why dont you go to the hospital to see your wife , who had just given birth to our third child at that time and return for him, since we only took my car. when i got back he shot another 715 or so and came in 2nd, and i didnt even attempt it.
the next memory is him bowling in the park circle pot games which was his home house and probably the best in that house at the time , a grind. about ten guys in the game including mark roth, danny wins 2 and mark wins 2 and everyone quit, danny asked mark to bowl singles and beat him 1 game and that was it. both winning there fair share for the night.
dan was also the first entry ever into the high roller, as he sent his thousand in a year in advance, when norm edelman announced the starting of that tournament, it might have been 1985 or 86 but you could ask norm or brad for the exact year.
a friend of 40 years he'll be missed , by not only me but many of the brooklyn scratch bowlers he befriended through the years
