Anyone remember Brien Hayes out of Norwalk, CT? I'm his daughter and would love to hear stories about him back in his glory days of bowling. He was a tall thin redhead (very red hair). He kind of just sits around and does nothing these days so it would be great if I could bring him back to the lanes and have him meet up with some old buddies. Thanks, Lola

I knew your father back in the 1970s and early 80s. I used to hang out at Town Fair Lanes in Stratford, CT, and your father would sometimes show up late on Friday Night, looking for action. Older guys told me that your father was one of the best bowlers they had ever seen, the equal of, or better than, pros like Ernie Shlegel, Bill Spigner, Willie Willis and Pete Couture. I think that he was better off when the game was harder, before urethane balls and slotted lanes. Brien Hayes was the type of bowler who could find a narrow line on tough conditions and bowl 240s; when the game became a contest to see who could carry best on conditions where you could miss your mark by 3 boards in either direction he became beatable.

Having a place like that in your house brings sugar plum's to my head. I have been away from bowling do to work (Medical Research in Aids) and a family that was very sick. So I have not been on the sight for awhile. Lost all of my family in just a short time, couple of months, and have been trying to get things back together. Started bowling again and won the league with five weeks left but it was my friends that did a great deal of the work. Went to the Peterson Classics's 100th for the first time and bowled on Ron Pollard's squad. Had a bad start!!!! but finished with three 200's (one I struck out from the 4th throwing Brooklyn's on lane 15 and pocket on 16. Won some bracket's and high game. Parker bowled the squad before. Worst racks with flood on one lane and no oil on the other. It was fun. But not close to being as tough as your house AC!!!! Well we practice every day but even shooting the 250's (I had 289 my last game) and been bowling tournaments on sport shot's but still have trouble zoning in like the action day's. So although I can still perform under pressure I now I do not have the confidence yet and my game still is rusty!!! But I loved your place and your site. It's great!!!! Sorry about blog on Brien Hayes but I knew him when he was in his prime, I use to travel with Pete Couture and I bowled with Bill Spigner and Willie Willis in his prime. That statement made no sense!!! All could beat each other on any given day!!!!

I haven't been back on this site since 2007 when I reunited Jeff Warga and my dad. I'm forever grateful to this site for that. Unfortunately, Brien passed away about a year later. But it was so amazing to find this again today! Thank you so much daryl and tflmike for posting these! I never really took an interest in bowling when I was little. My dad tried really hard to teach me, but I guess all those late nights at the bowling alley made me hate it before I could even give it a shot. Lately, I've been getting into it though. I would love to go somewhere he used to bowl, but I don't remember any of the places since I was so little. I know it's been a long time, but if anyone sees this and knows of a place where he used to go that's still open, please let me know! I searched for the Town Fair Lanes in Stratford that you mentioned and looked it up, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. Many years ago I went through a toll booth in western mass and got into a conversation about bowling with the attendant (there wasn't any traffic) and he said he knew of Brien. So he must of played up there a bit too. I live in NYC now, but take make regular weekend trips up that way. Last weekend I played at Cove Lanes in Great Barrington. Also, I could use a redo on those pointers he tried to give me so if anyone's up for that I would be overjoyed! - Lola

I do remember your dad too. He used to also bowl at Nutmeg where I think he ran the pro shop. This was the mid 70's. Friday nights at Town fair lanes for action bowling. I would see him at GoodTimes, a club in Norwalk at times.
