Early 70s
Back in the early 70's, after our league session at Meadow Lanes in Hartford, Jimmy McKue and a friend dressed in fatigues showed up looking for some action. A local by the name of Don Berry answered the call and took a singles match against McKue. The warmup tosses by McKue were awesome, and no one wanted to bet against him. Myself, I figure that the house bowler has a small edge during the first game at least, so I put down some money on Berry. Believe me, if you had wanted to bet your house, it would have been covered. Anyway, Berry shuts out Mckue in the 7th frame of game number one. I collect and head for the door.
A day or two later, I checked to see how the match had ended, and I heard that Mckue won the next 8 or 10 straight. There is a saying that cream always rises to the top. In an honest match, that will invariably happen. Jimmy was cream...lo-revs

I met Jinny at the pba national in reno 1978 I crossed with him he didnt have much left then but the last block he bowled well. the only excitement i saw there was i got married in between blocks .Venable walks my ex down the isle Tommy and Barbara hudson best man maid of honor. Joe Berardi ,roth ,rags and a slew of others attended. did not cash in the tournement no big deal i only cashed in 1 in 6 or 7 anyhow. Jimmy told me a few stories I think since i knew horn and santini he was willing to tell those stories especially to this 19 year old whose eyes would get bigger with each memory.

Action reporter, I don't know which Jimmy McCugh you are talking about but the one that bowled action had tons of revs and was basically 2nd to 3rd arrow shooter. Yes he could play the gutter but that was not his line of choice. I bowled Jimmy at Raceway Lanes in Yonkers (not on his pair) and came down one and quit. My game was at it's best at the time but I had to shoot 240 to beat him. He was amazing.

Jimmy Mchugh did beat Roth that night in the early seventies, especially the last game when Jimmy was down a ton in the fifth and won. However, he never could beat Faino who I felt was unbeatable for about 4 years. He beat McHugh every time he bowled him, at least 5 times. JM who was good friends with Lemon could play anywhere on the lane. He was a great gutter shooter. He won the tough marathon newsday one year. I remember one of the first times I saw him was at central. He was stuck over 1g, went to max the shy, borrowed 1g, won over 2g in the next hour and gave max back 1100. the juice was 10 pts. a week, no rebates for early payments.
