A Day At The Races (outline for a book / screen play by AC Butch) true story
It’s 8 am Wednesday morning, Paul and Cliff are sitting at the curb in their beat up 12-year-old ford in front of a bank on Ave U in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn. Their enjoying coffee and bagels with cream cheese from Dunkin Donuts. Cliff’s commenting about the hi quality of the coffee.
While their waiting for the bank to open lets go back 2 years in time and set up why Paul and Cliff are parked in front of this bank, and why they feel this will be one of the better days of their life.
Paul has been a would be entrepreneur since his early teens. He’s attempted many a business venture usually coming up short due to the lack of proper financing. Cliff has had many jobs from post office letter carrier to being a margin clerk for one of the top brokerage firms to his last occupation as a NYC cab driver. Paul is a good handicapper of horses at Aqueduct and Belmont. Cliff was a top-notch action bowler in his teenage years; they’re both good poker players.
Paul made a good size hit at the track which he used to start a paper bag distribution company and took Cliff in as his partner, Cliff had no money but that didn’t matter to Paul, they’ve been best of friends since the age of 14 when Cliff was booking bets on his pal Richie to beat Paul in a street fight which took place in front of the bowling alley on Ave M.
Cliff won his bets and gained a ton of respect for Paul who wouldn’t give up even when Richie was grinding his good-looking face into the snow and ice filled sidewalk. The fight started because Paul had hustled Richie’s younger brother James out of his weeks pay from working in a grocery store.
Paul and Cliff have had a Midnight Cowboy type relationship ever since.
The first thing the duo did with the new business was build a nice office in the rear of the warehouse they rented on McDonald Ave under the elevated train, unfortunately this and the purchase of some stock, (they had no credit yet), took up most of Paul’s bankroll.
They did what any good businesspersons would do; they started running a Friday night poker game with some of their new customers, local Greek diner owners who love to gamble.
Before the Greeks entered the game, Cliff invited Howie the Jew who he met when he was trying to purchase is own cab. Howie was an insurance agent who specialized in ripping off everyone, especially cab drivers.
He would help set them up with loans to purchase a cab medallion at ridiculous interest rates, which he received on going kick backs from.
Besides everything else, Howie was a miserable egotistical human being who truly believed he was the best t everything. Especially talking.
It turns out that Howie was taking a bath in their weekly poker game, he was a major chaser who couldn‘t except loosing because he thought he was a great poker player and everyone else was his patsy.
In order to get his money back, which he worshipped, he brought some top-notch card mechanics into the game.
There was Boris, one of the very best card and dice mechanics in the world, the problem with Boris simply was that he had a genius IQ, was an alcoholic and totally nuts. He worked with his protease Kosher, a young intelligent college type who wore a yarmulke and both respected Boris’s great talent and feared his wildness.
Howie later brought in more of Boris’s people, a catcher by the name of JR who was in his sixties, dressed to the nines and played the part of a businessman from Texas, there was also a middle aged woman catcher who supposedly owned a hi end boutique in NYC.
A catcher is a person the mechanic feeds the winning hand to.
To make a long story short, Howie ruined their very lucrative card game by doing this and now had to be paid back, big time!
The perfect situation arose, Paul and Cliff were trying to get back in with Miltie who was a big time bookie working the track, his clients were treated very well, he would get them passes to the club house, pay for their food and drinks in the best restaurant the track had to offer.
Miltie would book their bets on credit at true track odds. If you beat him, you were paid that at the end of that very same day, if you lost you had until the next time you saw him to pay up, within a reasonable time of course.
They ended their card game when they finally got Kosher to admit what was going on, after many weeks of Boris and his crew taking their game. They couldn’t spot how they were being taken, but knew something was wrong, there were just too many big hands with bad beats, and it just wasn’t possible.
If Boris wasn’t such a maniac, they never would have caught on. Kosher explained to them that when caught they admit to what’s been going down, it usually prevents any bad shit from happening. He said he and Boris would make them partners if they’d keep feeding them the suckers. They lost all their own cash at the track on a regular basis and had nothing to compensate Paul and Cliff with.
Paul said no thanks and ended the game. Boris and Kosher told Paul and Cliff that Howie (who they themselves can’t stand) set up the whole thing. Paul’s only request was that they didn’t tell Howie what came down. They agreed and Howie was kept in the dark about why the game ended. Paul told him they just couldn’t get enough players as of late.
The week before Howie was told the game was off for a while, Paul got him to vouch for a five thousand dollar shy loan at 5 points a week. Howie had previously told Paul if he ever needed some fast cash he could get it for him. The only reason Howie vouched for Paul was because he received a $500 fee from Paul plus 1 point a week from Cubby the shy on the inflated 5 points that should have been 3 points.
A month has past since the game broke up and Paul still didn’t get even with Howie yet, it had to be for a lot more than the five grand shy loan..
Paul and Cliff have fallen on some bad times, no income from the game which had been about $1500hundred a week, the business got slow and they took a few loses in a row at the track. As a matter of fact they’ve been going to the grandstand for the last few weeks, couldn’t afford the type of bets needed to bet with Miltie.
Howie was getting a little nervous because Paul was late the last 2 weeks with Cubby’s juice, just a few days but Howie more than knows where that can lead to. Howie comes to Paul and tells him he has this bank loan officer in his pocket. The deal is Howie can get Paul approved for a $15,000 personal loan, using phony ID and background information which Howie will supply and the bank officer will approve it.
The deal was once Paul gets the loan he will give Howie 5 grand to share with the banker and pay Cubby the five grand he owes leaving himself with five grand clear. Paul said sounds great, let’s do it.
A week goes by after Paul met with the banker and filled out all the forms. The loan was approved and this is the day to pick up the money. Paul told Howie he’d meet him at Bernie’s Diner on Coney island Ave about 10 am after he cashes the check, he then would catch up with Cubby later on in the day at The Grotto Doro where Cubby hung out to pay him off.
All goes well at the bank and Paul cashes the check and now has fifteen large bulging in his pockets. He clicks his heels as he approaches Cliff patiently waiting in the car. The first words out of his mouth is, it’s traaack time. He gets in the car with a big smile on his face and says Howie going to shit when I don’t show up.
Cliff pulls away from the curb while Paul tells him to go to his sister’s house first, we have to go to the track in style today.
Cliff pulls up to Marlene’s house, her brand new shiny black Lexus is in the driveway. Paul goes in and comes out with the keys to the new car in his hands, which he tosses to Cliff who always does the driving.
Cliff doesn’t trust the speedster Paul behind the wheel, but then again Cliff doesn’t trust anyone driving.
Paul gets in and the first words out of his mouth is would you believe that bitch of a sister of mine charged me a c note rental and wanted a $500 deposit in case we bring the car back damaged, that’s her deductible. I almost told her to get f**ked but figured we have to go back to the Club House in style today.
Meanwhile it’s now 11 am and Howie’s beginning to get real sweaty and edgy, he calls his friend at the bank who tells him Paul cashed the check and left over an hour ago. Howie now sweating profusely, he smells a rat, his instincts are usually pretty good. He rushes into the men’s room and tries his best to dry himself off. His mind is racing and then it hits him. Paul must have gone to the track with his money, if so he better get there before Paul blows it, which he knows he’s more than capable of doing.
Howie leaves word at the Grotto for Cubby to get a hold of Herbie and meet him at aqueduct at their regular spot.
About an hour and a half later Howie spots Cubby and Herbie, he explains to Cubby while Herbie is waiting off to the side that he got Paul a bank loan and was suppose to go to the Grotto to settle with him.
Howie already heard from other people that Paul was there. He had been seen in the grandstand talking to Ray. The three of them split up looking for Paul.
=================================================================
Cast of characters:
Paul is a good-looking, smooth-talking Italian who is used to women throwing themselves at him. He’s a sharp dresser and a great handicapper at the track. His impulsiveness constantly gets him and his best friend Cliff into trouble. However, once locked in battle, he never backs down, no matter what the odds or who the foe may be.
………………………………..............................................................................
Cliff is a big strong Swede who loves characters, besides trying to make money from Paul’s good handicapping and Ray’s tips it’s the those characters that draw him to the track. He’s the strong silent type. He has a voracious appetite for everything and consumes life with gusto. Where Paul is impulsive, Cliff is reserved and cautious – he only gambles when he has a good chance of winning.
………………………………..........................................................................................................
Howie The Jew is a miserable low life crooked insurance agent who worships money and will screw anyone to get it. He’s an egotistical ass hole who dresses expensively in poor taste, wears lots of gold, and sweats profusely. He thinks he’s the best at everything including the use of his mouth.
Howie is a sociopath
……………………………….........................................................................................................
Miltie, a good-looking man in his 40s whose hair has already turned silver grey. He’s a low-keyed gentleman who dresses in a very elegant refined manor. He has eyes that always look tired. He lives in the upper income North Shore of Long Island. He’s a bookie with the exclusive rights (from the mob, who he pays tribute to) to work the NY area racetracks. Miltie never strong-arms anyone, he doesn’t have to, his associates take care of that for him.
……………………………….......................................................................................................
Boris is a 6ft thin good looking ( in a strange dark way) guy with very scary eyes. One of his biggest assets besides his genius IQ and photographic memory is his very large hands. He can latterly make a deck of cards disappear in them.
Through out the years Boris has been banned from just about every legal casinos for cheating, bringing in loaded dice for which he’s a master at. The problem here is that Boris didn’t need to cheat because he’s one of, if not the best, dice control artists in the world. Dice control is completely legal so long as you follow the house rules and hit the backboards correctly. Of course the house will do everything they can to knock you off your game, but so what!
Boris was also one of, if not the best card mechanic’s in the world. He could pick up a deck of discarded cards and set up the winning and loosing hand while shuffling and you’ll never spot what he’s doing.
If he’s in a game where the house does the dealing he’ll bring in a pre set up cooler deck, when it’s his turn to cut the deck he simply switches the deck, he’s amazing, you’ll never see the switch take place, even if he tells you to watch his hands, that he’s about to do it. He demonstrated this once for Paul and Cliff, the only way they knew he did it was because he switched a red deck for a blue deck.
Boris usually sits next to Kosher, they’ll signal each other what type of card is needed, if the other one has it, Kosher will signal one of the catchers to draw attention to that side of the table while Boris with a quick of hand move (you’ll never spot) switches a card with Kosher.
Boris is banned from all the big private games and legal poker casinos.
He has his own network that specializes in smaller private games where their not known. There’s two mechanics, Boris and his protease Kosher, along with a cast of about ten catchers. A catcher is a person who plays the roll of some big money businessperson who is brought into the game to be feed the winning hand from the mechanic.
The catcher usually gets a set fee for the night and occasionally a bonus if things go really well.
Catchers don’t usually last to long working for Boris because his wildness and antics scare the hell out of them.
Boris plays a roll himself that he doesn’t understand is really him. He plays the part of an egotistical alcoholic chaser who can’t accept loosing. He feels that by drinking a lot of scotch at the table looks good for his image. The problem is he can’t hold his liquor the way he thinks he can and he starts getting belligerent and nasty as the night goes on.
The major problem is that when this happens he almost challenges people to try and spot what he doing by saying stupid things like I feel a big hand coming, or here it comes. This really scares anyone working the game with him.
Money came easy to Boris in card and crap games so off course he’d be at the track constantly loosing on the one game he couldn’t control, the horses.
Poetic justice, Boris was one of Ray’s suckers.
………………………………..............................................................................................
Kosher is a young nerdy type college kid with gifted hands. He met Boris at a neighborhood charity card game where he was cheating by dealing from the bottom of the deck to himself.
When he went to the men ’s room, he turned around and there was Boris starring at him, the silence finally broke and Boris said you have good hands kid but you’re an amateur.
That was the beginning of a relationship where Kosher was totally in awe off the talent Boris possessed and became his student..
After awhile Kosher also learned just how dangerous and nuts Boris was and why none of the big time pros would work with him anymore.
He wanted to break away from Boris like so many others before him have done but something unexplainable kept stopping him from making that break.
Boris would actually get off on playing with really bad and dangerous people and flaunt his game in a very scary way.
……………………………….................................................................................................
Fat Herbie Rothman, aka Herbie The Pig, besides looking and snorting like a pig, this 5 ft 6inch 245 lb maniac will charge you head first like a wild bore and bust your face wide open.
Herbie actually is a nice guy so long as you don’t cross him or look at him funny.
He works on the docks and does part time collection work for some of the local shy locks and anyone else that will put a buck in his pocket. He has no loyalties./
………………………………....................................................................................................
Cubby is a shylock who Howie brought Paul to for a five thousand dollar loan, which he guaranteed at 5 points a week, which is a sucker rate. Paul had to pay Howie five hundred for this favor and Howie received 1 point a week from Cubby, which Paul knew nothing about.
Fat Herbie worked for Cubby when needed.
Cubby despises Howie as a human being but makes some money from the people Howie brings him.
………………………………...............................................................................................
Frank The Businessman, Frank had a brick fall on his head early in life and hasn’t been the same since. He has a photographic memory but doesn’t always put his facts together properly. He speaks in fast bursts with a hi pitched voice. Frank goes to the track everyday dressed in a cheap but finely pressed suit, which he tailors himself.
Frank doesn’t go to the track to bet on the races, he goes to conduct his many different business enterprises.
One of which is to collect all the discarded tickets he can find on the floor. This is done for two reasons; first, he checks to see if any winning tickets were accidentally thrown away, occasionally he brings a looser to the window thinking it’s a winner. Secondly, he sells them to people who need to show loses for their income taxes.
Frank also picks up discarded tout sheets after the first few races and then resells them, he also brings home toilet paper and condiments from the various food stands.
One big problem Frank has is he’s a clean freak and fears germs so he wears surgical gloves and constantly washes his hands in the men’s room but hates to touch the door handles and faucets.
When Frank takes a piss or shit, he must wash the whole bottom half of his body with soap, water, and a special disinfectant.
………………………………..................................................................................................
Ray is a tout at the track that looks and sounds something like Louie from Taxi. Supposedly Ray gets very good information from the paddock, which he pays for. In actuality, he’s a very good handicapper that reads the Racing Form in between races inside his favorite stall in the men’s room.
He’ll choose 3 to five of his best picks per race while handicapping four or five races a day, he has his suckers separated at different locations around the track except for the Club House, he never meets his pigeons there for reasons of his own.
He’ll give them all different horses, which usually means a win for him one way or the other. They would give him part of their winnings, which had to be substantial, or Ray would cut them loose because he’d say, I have to pay the piper’s or they’ll stop playing for me.
Ray always wears the same ¾ black leather jacket, year round. Unlike Frank, I think he washes about once a month.
………………………………...................................................................................................
Lee claims the moment Elvis died his soul was transformed into Lee’s body.
Prior to that Lee was a good singer songwriter who had a slight resemblance to Elvis. Sometime after that unbelievable transformation Lee changed his name legally to Lee Elvis, started wearing stud filled street cloths with lots of gold and the Elvis trademark sunglasses along with a beautiful walking stick that was actually a weapon.
He married a very rich girl who worshipped and pampered him. He started to look and sound very much like Elvis, he had all of Elvis’s jump suites and stage wear duplicated. He performed to sell out audiences and was paid well for it.
Howard Stern was so taken back by Lee when he appeared on his show that he talked about Lee for the next two weeks.
Lee’s biggest problem besides having an out of control temper was his gambling addiction. Even though he was doing well he’d always get in over his head.
Lee would pull up to the track’s clubhouse entrance a few times a week in his stretch limo with his chauffer. Lee was one of Milties best customers and loved all the attention he received for it.
Lee loves to parlay when he’s winning, he’ll take some big shots and scares the crap out of Miltie.
Cliff was with him one day at Caesars in Atlantic City when Lee went broke at the craps table, which is his favorite game in all the world, he puts on a complete show for all to see.
He then hocked his gold at a pawnshop, which he’s done many times before. He came back to the crap table, got on a hot streak and parlayed a grand into $120,000, he lost it back that night.
==================================================================
Doug the Hawk Najar: Doug is truly an amazing athlete, he first meet Paul who is a very good ping pong player, Doug broke him and tore him apart, Paul figured the best way to get his money back was to put Cliff up against him in a softball hitting contest to see who could hit the most balls over the Ave P park fence, Cliff was a power hitter, Doug destroyed him.
That was the beginning of a good 3-way friendship and gambling partnership back in their teenage years. Douglas was great at everything he did from betting on sports to handicapping the trotters, playing poker, rummy, blackjack, shooting craps, you name it, he excelled at it.
Douglas had a few problems though, he was a sneak, a cheat and a compulsive gambler. He never quit until he went broke or the place closed down for the night.
One of his many talents at both the track and casino was being a good hawk when he did go broke.
A hawk is a person that can spot a pigeon, start up a conversation, tell the guy how he should be betting and then slowly becomes his partner and actually start handling his money and placing the bets, without ever putting up a dime of his own.
If that doesn’t work, Douglas will just lift the some of the guy’s chips from his rack or pick his pocket for cash.

The Three Stooges are Paul’s uncles Tommy & Paul along with their best friend Mac. All these guys love to do is gamble and eat free or as cheaply as possible, they’re cheap as cheap comes.
Just to give you an idea of how cheap, when they go to Yonkers two of them would stay up on the hill over looking the track with binoculars while just one of them, whoever won the coin toss that night would pay the $2 admission to get in and do all the betting for them.
When the Atlantic City casino’s opened, they thought they died and went to food heaven with all the day-tripper bus deals, they would get their $20 dollars back in coins plus a free lunch and any other comps they earned while gambling. All of a sudden, they became food connoisseurs.
These guys also trusted no one, when Paul and Cliff first started running their Friday night poker game they would come for all the great food Paul put out.
They would always loose, this was a time before the Greek’s came into the game. Paul and cliff had to play in the game in order to get the game off.
They usually ended up doing most of the winning. The three stooges swore they were being cheated even though they weren’t, so they tried cheating themselves , switching cards under the table etc. they still lost every week.
The other two main players in the game at the time was Howie the Jew and Vic the writer, another character in a half who Paul can’t stand.
They all lost constantly giving their money to Paul and Cliff, but they got feed real well.
Even though Paul and Cliff were partners in the game, they never cheated and always played their hands straight up, never getting anyone in the middle.
================================================================
Gus the Greek seafood restaurant owner, Paul and Cliff ran their game for a while from his restaurant after closing.
Gus was hard to figure out, you knew he was always up to no good but never let you in to what was happening, a total sneak.
================================================================
Bernie Marine is a 5ft 9in 160 lb retired marine drill sergeant who still sports a crew cut and lives off of his pension, which just barely covers his expenses.
He’s also a world-class handicapper. Bernie gets on the el train everyday that goes to Grand Central station where he transfers to the track train; he usually has about $8 to $10 left in his pocket after he pays for the racing form and transportation. He also carries a brown paper bag with his lunch and a shiny apple in it.
When Bernie gets to the track, he goes straight to the grandstand where he holds court.
His favorite seat is always held for him by one of his many followers who listen to him explain who should win the next race and how it will be run.
He’s very colorful and visual with his explanations. He also runs down the previous race and why it ended up the way, it did.
His followers end up having many more winners that Bernie, that’s because he’s always looking for value for his $2 bets, he’ll choose an (under valued long shot) instead of the horse most likely to win the race.
Bernie’s not interested in getting back $3.80, $6, or $8 for his deuce.
=====================================================================
Mikie Cash, the guy who ran an extremely successful bagel business on Nostrand Ave, a real cash cow, but because of his horse betting addiction he ended up selling 50% of his business to seven different people.
He also got the top mafia guy in the area arrested when he showed up in the basement of Mikes bakery to collect an over due juice payment in the middle of an FBI sting operation, Mike was dealing in phony 20s, the mafia guy had nothing to do with this but was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
====================================================================
Victor Bertini, a true narcissistic, Vic is 6ft 6, dresses really well, has a great radio announcer type voice and talks like he graduated from Oxford.
He’s a writer and small time motion picture director, Vic is liked by no one except the women he’s living off. He’s usually broke (but you would never know it) he puts up a good front.
He thinks he’s a great businessman but actually sucks at it. In reality, he’s a sucker for anyone with a good line. He loves to gamble which he also thinks he’s great at but constantly looses.
====================================================================
Introducing the characters.
A good way to introduce these characters and what their all about is to have a freeze frame on their face the first time their spotted at the track, then have the camera follow them for a short period of time with a voice over explaining who they are and what makes them tic.
The beauty of this is that once this is done it adds on to the list of characters that go to the track and nothing further has to be done with them unless we want more.

Later on that day:
Cubby spots Paul having a drink at the bar in the Man Of war room; he walks over and casually says I hear you’re looking to settle up.
Paul looks him straight in the eye and says that’s not gonna happen.
Cubby gives him an ice-cold stare.
Paul sticks his hand in his pocket and hands cubby $250 dollars and says here’s the vig for this week.
Paul then says that co*k sucker Howie screwed me big time so here’s how it’s gonna come down.
Paul goes back to his pocket and says I’m having a good day while counting off five grand, he hands it to Cubby and says here’s a gift for being such a nice guy but you’ll have to collect my debt plus any missed juice and penalties from that pile of shit.
Paul sticks out his hand and says are we good,
Cubby accepts his hand and simply says, were good, and walks away shaking his head.
=====================================================================
Howie sees Cubby going down the escalator towards the exit and doubles time to catch up to him. Where you headin, did you see Paul.
Cubby answers, he’s at the bar in The Man Of War Room,
Howie responds, did he pay up,
I’ll put it this way, I’ll see you later at the Grotto, and bring this week’s vig before your late.
Howie turned pale, the sweat was dripping down his face as he said , what the hell’s going on here.
Cubby responds, if you see Herbie tell him I left as he walks away.
Howie’s just stood there frozen, all of a sudden, he snapped out of it and started running up the escalator towards the Man of War Room.
=====================================================================
Howie can’t find Paul at the bar and now he’s both sweating and shaking. He walks into the dinning, spots Cliff at one of the tables and says where the hells that mother f**ker co*k sucker partner of yours.
Cliff just calmly stars in his eyes and says, you better watch your mouth before you get something stuck in it.
Howie turns and goes storming off.
===================================================================
Herbie spots Paul in the Grandstand where he‘s getting a tip from Ray.
He approaches Paul and tells him Cubby looking for him and he should come with him now.
………………………………................................................
Paul and Herbie have a lot of history together going back to their bowling alley days.
On one of those days at Ave M, Paul caught up to Herbie and asked him for the money he owed him from a gambling debt.
Herbie basically told him while snorting to f**k off.
At this point Paul who stubbornly backs down to no one gets right in Herbie’s face
Herbie snorts out, Paul, your gonna get hurt.
Paul says, bring on fat boy.
Herbie backs up, lowers his head and charges Paul, they both go flying threw and shatter the glass front doors of the bowling alley.
Paul gets up first, bleeding from about 5 different spots, he bends over Herbie while bleeding all over him and says, I want my f**kin money, now.
Herbie starts laughing and says, yaw know your nuts.
……………………………….......................................................
Getting back to the present. Paul tells Herbie he already saw Cubby and all is well.
Herbie knows Paul to be a straight shooter so accepts this as gospel.
Paul then puts his arm around Herbie and says, what’s the price for you to wash that sweaty f**kin face of Howie’s in the toilet bowl.
Hebie thinks for a moment and says what about three bills.
Paul peels off three c notes, hands them to Herbie and says, clean the co*ksucker up.

Gus the Greek seafood restaurant owner, Paul and Cliff ran their game for a while from his restaurant after closing.
Gus was hard to figure out, you knew he was always up to no good but never let you in to what was happening, a total sneak.

=====================================================================
====================================================================
====================================================================

Story lines
====================================================================
=====================================================================
=====================================================================

The warehouse is on McDonald Ave Brooklyn under the el train. It had a big pull-down mettle door that made lots of noise. It’s about 20 feet wide and 70 feet deep. There are no windows in the warehouse giving it a dark feeling in more than one way.
