I saw Lou at cicle lanes a few months ago. he was just stopping buy TO SMELL THE LANES. I thought that kinda funny, he told me since he has been 5 years old he loved the smell of walking into a bowling alley. He also said he wished his back would allow him to bowl again. I saw him through 3 or 4 balls than quit he could still rev it up funny thing was his 1st shot missed right the next 3 were all flush, with a house ball!!!!! he must have been a hell of a bowler when he was younger. becouse a few bowlers his age that knew him said his biggest problem when he bowled on tour was immaturity and he was way to young to be out there at 18.They also said he was a very tough action bowler beating many bowlers named on this site by the time he was 20 years old.

I bowled Lou 1 time at Maple I went there for action and beat 2 guys first then this 15 or 16 year old kid wants to bowl me, I asked if he was serious he said yes so we bowled. now remember I had just beat 2 top shooters in the house and now everyone wants action on this kid. I unfortunatly lost the 1st 3 games. So I quit. the following week I came back to maple and asked if we could bowl agaain,he said why? I already beat you, I have nothing else to prove. We bowled in a few leagues and many a tournements including PBA events together over the next few years and became friends But the SOB never gave me a rematch. I was there at Laguardia the night he beat behrbaum 3 straight than burgland 2 straight before they quit. He never gave them a rematch either. He was a tough bowler.

hey Lou seems like you are as popular now as you were in the old days. its a shame you're not bowling anymore but you are right everyone averages over 200 now the equiptment is amazing, and these TOP ACTION bowlers couldn't hold a candle for you, horn, snakes ,rudy revs or any of the great action shooters of the past. but time goes on and so does the evolution of the game of bowling. be well my old friend be well.

I met you once in Jersey at Carolier Lanes in 1978 or 79. We were all getting hooked up by Roger Gardner for a tournament in Cleveland. Met you through a mutual friend Paul Polito. You were a gentleman, and certainly had talent

Have you heard from or seen paul I would like to see him again since i now reside in N.J.

Lou, I haven't seen Paul in many years. Last I heard he was living in Florida. But back in the day, Paul and I did a lot of bowling together( Carteret Lanes, Edison Lanes-now defunct-to name a few). For a little guy he generated a lot of power.
I had just started bowling again till major knee surgery has sidelined me for another few months. But I tend to agree with your position on how easy the scoring is today versus the late 70's -80's. Like yourself, I stopped bowling in the late 80's averaging 206,212 in two different houses. OJ(Carolier Lanes) drilled me a resin ball(he has his own pro-shop now)- all I can say is unbelievable, although it not the first time I have used one. Remember when the black Hammer came out, I remember Roger Gardner saying that no ball will ever hit harder.
Today with these new resin balls, I watch guys suitcase the ball and just shred the rack-like they know what they are doing. Back in the day, we worked with 1 or 2 balls. How many times did we have to change hand postions or speed to negotiate the heads.
The first time I used a resin ball was off the rack at Maple Lanes about 3 years ago. My inlaws are from Brooklyn, it was Sunday and we had nothing to do-so we went bowling. We were on the low end of the house, I had not bowled since the late 80' up to that point. This resin ball made me look like a superstar, 660 for 3games.
Anyway I've rambled enough. I'll talk to you again Lou.

Lou...they have a "Beat the House" on Sunday mornings at 10:00 at Circle. Last week there was a good turnout. Some "pot" games usually afterwards.

Hi Lou, My Name is Vincent Palumbo, and I would say you do not know me. I remember meeting you the one time at Carolier through Paul Polito, and maybe, but I am not sure - at Paramus Eastern Classic. This site brings back memories and I was thinking back to the Carolier days, way back when.

Hi Vinny I too remember the paramus leagues, those were the days when there was always a crowd in the stands wathing us bowl. I remember back in the late 60's and early 70's as a 10 to 13 year old going with my father to watch the bowlers like, Sparando, McNevitch , Ditolla, Butch dangel, and of coarse the top pro's like Rags( who I have always idolized) roth, teata semiz, Perry vetrone and all the rest. I lucky enough to got to bowl in that league in 74 or 75 with Charlie venable.I had Subbed for his team in the met majors and bowled well so He asked me to sub at paramus when I arrived with my father and 3 of his friends. It was athrill for me and my dad. We actually bowled against Rags 'team and I bowled 680 or so,remember I was just about 16 at the time. As a kid Petraglia would always come to maple and practice and I was like a rat on cheese , I would always get the lane next to him and bowl, I was probobly a gnat he could not scratch thinking back now. Sometimes he would bring other pba members with him. I remember meeting Dave Davis and Skee Foremsky and dennis swayda, who being the only righty there , could not play the gutter at all and as usual I was on the pair next to them with Joe s who had just drilled me a Blue dot. and I shoot 300 with it It was my 2nd 300 ever. But The best part was as I thru strike after strike Rags and the rest of the guys started to talk to me. and Rags asked me to show Dennis how to play the ledge. But Growing up watching a true PBA legend was the motivation I needed. Even though I didnt do as well as I should of on the national tour with only a couple of finals and about a dozen other checks in about 65 tourny's But I was always a top notch Regional bowler with about a dozen finals almost everyone in the top 5 with 1 win a second and a 4the out of about 30 regionals. Another thing Petraglia was not the only class act in that family his father Bill was my coach as a junior and a teammate of mine in the Maple Classic league. He also was an excellant bowler and coach and person. Thanks for listening to all that dribble but it feels good to write about it. One funny thing was I always bowled well against Roth and Rags when we came across each other. I remember bowling Rags in the finals at country lanes in 1979 or 1980 and winning the match against him than losing to steve Tripp the eventual winner and the outcome was due to my leaving a solid 8 in the 11th. Nut I finished a distant 3rd to those 2. the year before Roth didn't have to sho up thats how much of a lead he had but we were not the friendliest that week becouse our ex's had a spat, But our match was important to both and it came down to the 10th wit me needing 2 in the 10th as I flush the 1st one I give a clap towards him, as the 2nd one hits I turn around before the ball hits and do a Salvino move by putting my hands in my pocket meaning I have you in my pocket . anyway learned a good lesson that day even though I won the match I also got fined a 100 dollars for the gesture!!!!!

ok. well vp I did it again on sunday ,bowled 2 more games and bowled better. I felt more comfortable out there. I truly believe with some equiptment that fit me and some of the newer technology balls I could avg 230-235 at circle lanes I had at least 5 boards. probobly more but even out of shape I will not miss my mark by that much. my back hurts today I am afraid it will completely go out so i must be careful. I wish I had some company out there to help me make the COMEBACK. lol Truthfully the game easier especially for a shotmaker. i watched some guys throw 2 shots in different area codes and strike.it is fun to bowl again , 4 to 5 weeks with no back problem I will be ready for a tourny or something.

Hi Lou, glad the comeback is going well. Bowling with resin is a bit different though, it will take bit bit to get used to. I am a lefty, and from what I find the futher left and down the lane I throw it the harder the ball comes back. I had been using a Storm Eraser, up till my knee surjury.
By the way where is Circle Lanes located?

Hi Lou, glad the comeback is going well. You had mentioned switching to resin. Bowling with resin is a bit different, it will take bit bit to get used to. But the ball reaction is amazing. I am a lefty, and from what I find the futher left and down the lane I throw it the harder the ball comes back. In the days of urethane, if you pulled the shot you paid unless you were bowling on a wall, then it set for you. With resin if you tug the shot a bit, the ball will still will still go long. I had been using a Storm Eraser, up till my knee surjury. I had bowled 12 games in the league with it and averaged near 230 for the 12 games and 204 overall.
By the way where is Circle Lanes located?

Hey VP i remember the cleveland stop, Paul and Roger and I traveled together they drove with me in my van to buckeye lanes. It was snowing all the way Paul slept the whole trip about 15 hrs in that weather, and roger and I drove all the way. Do you remember Stick. I bumped into him about 12 years ago he is a golf pro now and I was hitting balls and he recognised me and we started talking.Got a free lesson too! type at you soon Louis
